Midlands Cyber Advancing Gender Inclusive Policies in AI and Cyber Security for MSMEs

09 Sep 2024

Cluster Manager, Ryan Protheroe was honored to participate recently in a roundtable at the House of Commons focused on "Advocating Gender Inclusive Policies in AI Adoption and Cyber Security." This event, hosted by Andrew Pakes MP in collaboration with Aston Business School and The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade, brought together leaders to discuss the role of AI and cyber security in supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with a particular focus on gender inclusivity.

With over 35% of UK firms already integrating AI into their operations, the conversation highlighted the significant opportunities AI offers for MSMEs, from automating tasks to optimising business processes. However, with the rapid digitalisation of businesses comes a sharp increase in cyber threats. More than 40% of attacks now target small businesses, which often lack the resources and expertise to defend themselves adequately.

This reality poses a particular risk to women-led MSMEs, who are disproportionately impacted by limited budgets and in-house expertise. As cyber readiness is now critical for MSMEs to thrive in both domestic and international trade, the importance of empowering these businesses with AI-driven cyber security tools was clear. AI can help MSMEs detect threats earlier, automate security tasks, and reduce human error, providing a much-needed advantage. For women-led businesses, AI offers an even greater opportunity to enhance security and build investor confidence, ensuring their participation in global markets.

Our Cluster Manager, Ryan Protheroe commented "I look forward to continuing this important conversation and driving further impact in the Midlands and beyond. Special thanks to Anitha Chinnaswamy from Aston University for the invitation and continued support. Together, we can ensure that MSMEs—especially those led by women—are equipped to thrive in the digital economy."

At Midlands Cyber, we are committed to supporting MSMEs in building cyber resilience by strengthening our partnership between government, academia, and industry. The discussions at this roundtable reinforced the need for enhanced digital skills, increased funding opportunities, and a focused effort to ensure AI adoption and cyber security solutions are inclusive and accessible to all.
