Strengthening IoT Security: Midlands Cyber Attends the Launch of Warwick University’s IoT-SETEC Lab

18 Feb 2025

Midlands Cyber was delighted to attend the launch of the IoT Security Operational Test & Evaluation Centre (IoT-SETEC) at WMG, University of Warwick. This pioneering facility is set to become a key resource for businesses and researchers tackling the growing security challenges in Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS).

As businesses across the Midlands continue to innovate with IoT technologies, smart manufacturing, and connected systems, ensuring the security and resilience of these devices is more critical than ever. The IoT-SETEC lab provides a dedicated, world-class environment for testing, evaluating, and strengthening IoT security, offering our cyber cluster and its members new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and commercial growth.

Why IoT-SETEC Matters for Midlands Cyber and Our Members

The rise of Industry 4.0, smart cities, and digital transformation has led to an explosion of IoT devices, many of which lack robust security measures. This presents significant risks, including data breaches, supply chain vulnerabilities, and operational disruptions. The IoT-SETEC lab is designed to address these challenges by providing:

  • Comprehensive Security Testing - End-to-end evaluations for IoT devices, ensuring they can withstand real-world cyber threats.
  • Threat Detection & Risk Identification - Scanning for common IoT vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and protocol weaknesses.
  • Communication & Network Security - Assessing secure data transfer across cloud environments, industrial networks, and mobile interfaces.
  • Cost-Effective Solutions - Making advanced security testing more accessible to SMEs and tech businesses.
  • Legislative & Compliance Expertise - Helping businesses navigate the evolving regulatory landscape for IoT security.

A Game-Changer for Midlands-Based Cyber Companies

For cybersecurity companies, digital technology providers, and manufacturers across the Midlands Cyber Cluster, this new facility offers several exciting opportunities:

  • Collaboration & R&D - Businesses can work with WMG’s experts to develop and test new security solutions, staying ahead of emerging threats.
  • Access to Cutting-Edge Testing - SMEs that might lack in-house security testing capabilities can benefit from IoT-SETEC’s world-class resources.
  • Industry Standards & Compliance - As IoT security regulations evolve, the lab can support businesses in meeting compliance requirements and best practices.
  • Knowledge Sharing & Upskilling - Midlands Cyber is keen to facilitate connections between our members and IoT-SETEC, ensuring businesses can leverage the expertise available.
