Cyber Security Kickstart Programme

A brand new six-month paid Cyber Security Kickstart Programme has launched this year for those who want to get a head start in the cyber security industry. The programme is designed to open opportunities for those who are on the hunt for entry-level jobs in the cyber sector. If you have a genuine ambition to work in the cyber sector, this kickstart programme is for you!

Birmingham City University are working with the Department for Skills, Innovation and Technology to set up five paid internships with cyber-related organisations in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The roles are due to start in August 2024 and will run for 24 weeks until February 2025. These positions are designed to be a stepping stone into the cyber sector and for many of them you won’t need to have specialist skills or knowledge.

Are the roles paid?

  • Yes, you will be paid by your placement employer. Roles are paid at the National Living Wage. Hours are likely to be 25 per week for 24 weeks.

What will I be doing on the internship?

  • Each of the internship roles will be with different companies and each will have their own job descriptions. You can find more details there about the work you will be doing and the support you’ll receive

What if I don’t have relevant experience or particular qualifications?

  • There is no expectation that candidates will already have worked in the cyber sector. The aim of the project is to provide relevant experience to interns to help them build a career in Cyber.

How does the process work?

  • You can register interest in the scheme using the link below. We will then share details of the individual roles. To apply you will need to email a copy of your CV. If you are shortlisted then we will be in contact about interviews which will either be conducted online or in person at the company offices.

What support will I get whilst on my internship?

  • You will have regular 1:1s with your employer over the six months, and access to relevant on the job training for the role. In addition you will have an allocated adviser at Birmingham City University who can provide additional support and guidance

What happens after the internship finishes?

  • The aim of the internships is that interns are able to progress into a longer-term role either with the same company or into another cyber related role. You will receive support to help you as you look to progress in the sector for up to 6 months.
